Lauren Toyota’s Fave Ways to Make Your Mornings Cozy
The influencer behind @HotForFood (she has over 300,000 followers on Instagram!), shares her tricks for the best breakfast in bed ever.
It might be summer but that doesn’t mean I’m darting out of bed at sunrise raring to go! I loooove slow mornings — the cozier the better. Whether you’re solo or have the whole fam jam piling into bed, I hope this super cozy list, consisting of some of my fave morning things, brings you some weekend (or weekday) inspo and let’s you savour the small things before you get moving for the day.
The word cozy implies comfort food. Carbs on carbs on carbs. You gotta do it in the name of self-care! My tip for total comfort — aka a carby breakfast or brunch — is to invest in a quality waffle iron. A good one makes all the difference! Get this Cuisinart Belgian Waffle and Pancake Maker and then you can make my vegan chocolate chip banana waffles for a sweet syrupy morning ritual.
#2: LOTSA COFFEE
No one can take away my love for coffee! I’m not trying to be trendy, but first coffee! Seriously. It actually is the first thing I do when I walk out of my bedroom everyday. I make coffee. Now everyone has his or her own personalized way to get caffeine into their system, but I have to say this Delonghi Pump Espresso Machine is a game changer! Foam or go home is my new motto, because once you make a homemade vegan cappuccino in your pj’s, well you’re just part of a new reality. The reality where you need to own an espresso maker and you can’t ever go back.
#3: SWEET & SAVORY FLAVOURS
There’s something very satisfying about enjoying sweet and savoury flavours at breakfast or brunch. It definitely ups the cozy factor if you can deliver on this one. Plus, you’ll be so obsessed with your new waffle maker you’ll be looking for excuses to use it even more! Make a classic sweet waffle for the kids, but how about something sophisticated for the adults. I made Green Waffles stuffed with spinach, green onion, and vegan cheese and then loaded the stack with avocado, arugula, herbs, and a drizzle of Sriracha maple syrup. You can find both of these waffle recipes on my site, hotforfoodblog.com.
I’m thrilled to be partnering with Hudson’s Bay this year to showcase their extensive, stylish, and modern housewares. I mean, I’m a food blogger, so shopping for new photography props and food appliances is what I was made for! I fell in love with a couple new collections from Denby —the Studio Blue and Natural Canvas Stoneware styles. Truthfully, I got shaky thinking about how much fun I was going to have coming up with creative for this breakfast video… it’s vegan waffles two ways and you can watch it now.
#4: A COMFY BED
Of course you can’t continue your cozy morning if you didn’t snooze in a sanctuary! For that you absolutely need a comfy bed with fresh, soft linens that soothe you to sleep and make you not want to leave in the a.m. I love my bed so much that I’m guilty of eating breakfast (or dinner!) in it from time to time. I say go for it, as long as you don’t mind a couple crumbs in the sheets!
Hudson’s Bay has infinite possibilities when it comes to comfy bed sheets, duvets, and pillows. Personally, I’m all about making a bedroom as neutral and as much like a luxury hotel room as possible. So I found just what I was looking for with Hotel Collection and added some textured pillow shams to my bed’s current look.
#5: YOUR FAVE PEEPS
While all the food, housewares, and convenient appliances get me very excited and help get the day off to a great start, it’s really important that you spend your cozy mornings with your fave peeps… and yes, animals count too! It’s all about the love and sharing it. That’s my cat Snickles. He loves photoshoots and has his own instagram, in case you are cat obsessed like me!
So, gather the ones you love and have breakfast in bed this weekend! I know this kind of cozy morning ritual will continue to bring you joy throughout your week and give you something to look forward too. Leave a comment below with something you like to do to cozy-up your mornings!
