SPF Essentials to Get You Through Summer
Protect yourself and your family this season with our ultimate SPF guide.
Hiding in the shade all summer is not something any of us want to do. But in order to be our best hot weather selves, it’s a necessity that we slather on sunscreen.
Did you know that zinc oxide has been used as a popular way to protect skin from sun damage for thousands of years? Sunscreen was first used in 1928, with L’Oréal founder Eugène Schueller bringing the first SPF lotion to market in 1938. And since then we have been blessed with a plethora of options to make sure we are shielded from the sun’s rays.
So grab a tube before you head out to catch that Frisbee and those rays.
SPF TIPS & FACTS
*Keep your face well protected throughout the day by not only applying SPF in the morning, but by bringing a cute hat and shades with you on any outdoor adventure. And always take the shady side of the street when going for a lunchtime stroll.
*Use at least a nickel-sized amount on your face and one ounce (or enough to fill a shot glass) on your body. Apply 15 to 30 minutes before heading outside, while also making sure to reapply directly after swimming or vigorous activity and at least every two hours.
*Don’t forget to protect your lips. Use an SPF of at least 15 on your pout, and apply often, especially after eating or drinking.
*Some makeup now contains sunscreen, which should be treated as bonus protection only. Make sure to still apply a lotion SPF, and let is sink into the skin, before apply your makeup.
